Pierre Johnson participated to TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity) writers workshop on AgriFood, that took place in UNEP’s offices in Paris on May 2016, and to the preparation of a chapter of the Scientific and Economic Foundations Report, which will be published in March 2018.
The TEEB AgriFood process
The TEEB AgriFood initiative seeks to provide a comprehensive economic evaluation of the “eco-agri-food systems” complex, and demonstrate that the economic environment in which farmers operate is distorted by significant externalities, both negative and positive, and a lack of awareness of dependency on natural, human and social capital.
Limitations of the TEEB AgFood valuation framework
From a systemic point of view, valuation alone doesn’t provide understanding of the dynamics of the systems under valuation.
Therefore, we proposed to TEEB a complementary analysis, in terms of systems dynamics of the agrifood chains.
