On a pris l\u2019habitude de parler de l\u2019Artemisia comme d\u2019une esp\u00e8ce, quand en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 il s\u2019agit d\u2019une famille (ou genre, dans le langage botanique) qui comprend au moins 500\u00a0esp\u00e8ces. La pr\u00e9sidence malgache aurait d\u00fb, en toute rigueur, parler dans son communiqu\u00e9 d\u2019Artemisia annua, pour identifier cette esp\u00e8ce.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alternatives-economiques.fr\/artemisia-une-plante-entre-medecine-politique\/00093004#footnote1_0agsjq9\">1<\/a> (<span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">actually<\/span><\/span> <em>Artemisia annua,<\/em> <span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">one of the species of the genus <\/span><\/span><em>Artemisia<\/em>) <span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">and medicinal plants endemic to Madagascar, and that &#8220;<em>Madagascar produces the biggest<\/em><\/span><span class=\"\" title=\"\"><em> quantity and the best quality of artemisia<\/em>\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"\">The initiative rose the interest of African heads of state.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">A few days later, nine of them gathered by videoconference &#8211; because of the pandemic &#8211; to listen to Andry Rajoelina extolling the preventive and curative virtues of his remedy, &#8220;<em>more effective and less invasive than chloroquine<\/em>&#8220;.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">A few weeks later, Madagascar graciously delivered cases of Covid-Organics to some twenty African countries.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">On May 20, the Haitian president authorized testing of the Malagasy remedy in Haiti, and praised &#8220;<em>African science<\/em>&#8220;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<div class=\"c-comments o-page__block--offset--invert u-hidden u-visible--medium\">\n<article class=\"c-kiosk--single\">\n<h2><strong>The WHO sermon<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">The initiative did not, however, arouse the enthusiasm of the World Health Organization (WHO). On May 4, the Geneva-based institution recalled, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/fr\/news\/loms-soutient-une-medecine-traditionnelle-reposant-sur-des-elements-scientifiques-probants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement warning<\/a>, that tests must be carried out before any large-scale use, &#8220;<em>even when treatments are derived from traditional practice and from nature<\/em>&#8220;. Madagascar is conducting such tests under the authority of the Madagascan Institute for Applied Research (IMRA)\u200b\u200b&#8230; but the timeline has been reversed between the Covid-Organics tests and its dissemination. On launch day, IMRA had only tested less than a dozen people. The President of Madagascar answered to the critics by concluding: &#8220;<em>What&#8217;s wrong with Covid-Organics? The problem is, he&#8217;s from Africa.<\/em>&#8221; Dr J\u00e9r\u00f4me Munyangi, a Congolese scientist who has devoted his career to researching responses to malaria, specifically through <em>Artemisia annua<\/em>, advocates for strict and thorough studies to determine the effectiveness of this treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"\">In fact, <em>Artemisia annua<\/em> is not a newcomer to illness and antiviral treatment.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Used for over two thousand years in southwest China, this annual plant gave rise to intense research during the Vietnam War, leading to the extraction in 1972 of one of its active ingredients, called<\/span> <span title=\"\">artemisinin.<\/span> <span title=\"\">This substance, the study of which received a Nobel Prize in medicine in 2015, is used in the latest therapies for malaria developed by the pharmaceutical industry.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">This plant was also widely used in China during the Sars-CoV epidemic of 2002-2003, scientific studies having been carried out since then, with positive results.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Two conflicting models<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">WHO&#8217;s reaction echoes the low-intensity war between the multilateral organization allied to some pharmaceutical companies, on the one hand, and actors seeking to promote less expensive, herbal health solutions, on the other hand<\/span><span title=\"\">.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The former advise against monotherapies based on artemisinin, but also on <em>Artemisia annua<\/em> in infusion or decoction, to prevent the parasite from becoming accustomed to the molecule.<\/span> <span title=\"\">In doing so, they fuel confusion.<\/span> <span title=\"\">In fact, artemisinin is only one of the dozen molecules in <em>Artemisia annua,<\/em> and no such addiction has been noticed over centuries of using the plant as a decoction or infusion. This<\/span><span class=\"\" title=\"\"> is not the case for the use of drugs containing the sole molecule.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"c-epigraph o-page__block--offset u-thema\">\n<blockquote class=\"c-epigraph__content\"><p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">The use of Artemisia has been shown to be effective against malaria in clinical trials<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 2013, the WHO had developed and approved a <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/92455\/9789241506090_eng.pdf;jsessionid=96C15C4F95BB98F8DAFFCCC6B7BC6697?sequence=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Strategy for traditional medicine for the decade 2014-2023<\/a>. But the budget of the multilateral organization depends less and less on States and more and more on public and private donations. The Gates Foundation, known for its proximity to large private groups<a id=\"footnoteref4_ynjedfc\" class=\"see-footnote\" title=\"Lire par exemple Lionel Astruc, L\u2019art de la fausse g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9. La Fondation Bill et Melinda Gates. R\u00e9cit d\u2019investigation. Actes Sud,\u00a02019.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alternatives-economiques.fr\/artemisia-une-plante-entre-medecine-politique\/00093004#footnote4_ynjedfc\">4<\/a>, was for example its second largest donor, behind the United States, until 2019. This could explain the evolution of the WHO position, as the use of <em>Artemisia annua<\/em> in decoction has met with unexpected success. In fact, in recent years, several dozen producer groups have appeared on the African continent, which market dried Artemisia leaves in small bags, for the prevention and treatment of malaria. There is even a House of Artemisia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pierrejohnson.eu\/en\/artemisia\/\">Maison de l&#8217;Artemisia<\/a>), a French association created in 2013 which has established a protocol guaranteeing the quality of the finished product. Faced with new outbreaks of malaria in recent years, several African states, such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi, are now calling for this solution. The use of the plant has also proven its effectiveness against malaria in randomized double-blind clinical trials<a id=\"footnoteref5_apm0qss\" class=\"see-footnote\" title=\"Ce type de tests constitue le standard pour le d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019un nouveau m\u00e9dicament ou traitement m\u00e9dical. Il suppose une base suffisante de personnes test\u00e9es, et que celles-ci ne sachent pas si elles prennent le traitement dont on v\u00e9rifie l\u2018efficacit\u00e9 ou un placebo. Ceux qui r\u00e9alisent le test ignorent \u00e9galement \u00e0 qui est administr\u00e9 le traitement ou le placebo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alternatives-economiques.fr\/artemisia-une-plante-entre-medecine-politique\/00093004#footnote5_apm0qss\">5<\/a> conducted by Dr J\u00e9r\u00f4me Munyangi in DRC.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">The debate between defenders and detractors of <em>Artemisia annua<\/em> recall the profound difference, both in terms of health management and of economics, between the dominant approach to health, in which pharmaceutical companies are the main producers and suppliers<\/span> <span title=\"\">of health services, and the approach of communities, local actors and States developing prevention and treatment methods adapted to scarce local resources.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">The latter also recalls the concern of a growing part of the Western population wishing to reclaim their own health and become less dependent on a pharmaco-chemical industry that has become suspected of defending powerful private interests.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"\">The WHO, however, underlined in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/list\/traditional_medicine_strategy\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2013 strategy document<\/a> [click on &#8220;Anglais&#8221; under the document icon as the English version of this page has disappeared] that <em>&#8220;traditional medicine (<\/em><\/span><\/span><em>T&amp;CM) is an important and often underestimated part of health care. T&amp;CM is found in almost every country in the world (&#8230;). TM, of proven quality, safety, and efficacy, contributes to the goal of ensuring that all people have access to care<\/em>.&#8221;<span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">This traditional medicine is often based on plants.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<article class=\"c-kiosk--single\">\n<h2><strong>An emergency solution<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"\">The use of <em>Artemisia annua<\/em>, a species now widespread on all continents and whose safety is guaranteed by centuries of use (ancient Chinese texts attest to its use for at least two thousand years), thus seems interesting <\/span><span title=\"\">when the pharmaceutical industry cannot provide any medicine or vaccine with proven efficacy against the symptoms of Covid-19.<\/span> <span title=\"\">In France, the Maison de l&#8217;Artemisia, associated with a group of scientists, wrote on March 23 to the French authorities suggesting that they have clinical tests carried out by the military health service in order to assess the<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">safety of the treatment, to relieve respiratory symptoms and its possible side effects.<\/span> <span title=\"\">A letter that was not answered.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"c-epigraph o-page__block--offset u-thema\">\n<blockquote class=\"c-epigraph__content\"><p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">Africa has paid a heavy price for malaria for decades, and Artemisia has already saved thousands of lives there<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">Lacking a response from the French government, the Maison de Artemisia forwarded its proposal to the departments of Health of African states, several of which responded quickly.<\/span> <span title=\"\">A Rwandan research office has taken over the clinical trial proposal.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">The public should recall that Africa has paid a heavy price for malaria for decades, with 94% of the deaths in 2018 (i.e. more than 380,000 deaths, more annually than the global number of deaths from Covid-19 at the end of May 2020)<\/span><span title=\"\">.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">And that <em>Artemisia annua<\/em> and <em>Artemisia afra<\/em> (a perennial and endemic African species that has also been shown to be effective against malaria) have already saved thousands of lives on the continent.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">This background explains the high level of <em>Artemisia annua<\/em> production in Madagascar.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"\">The controversies behind the use of <em>Artemisia annua<\/em> in the fight against Covid-19 relate to several dimensions: the political opportunity for Madagascar and other states to promote an \u201cAfrican\u201d solution, the need for a<\/span> <span title=\"\">response adapted to an emergency situation and to the limited means of the populations and of certain States and, finally, the misunderstandings, not to say the conflicts of interest, between an approach based on the pharmaceutical industry and a traditional use
